The Many Faces of Toronto Harbour

One of the eternal struggles when shooting period films is how to convincingly get characters from place to place. During the early 1900’s the only option for travelling overseas was by ship but it’s no small task finding either a period ship or a period harbour… so we created our own at the Toronto Harbour.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been working on the HD restoration of Kevin Sullivan’s ”Lantern Hill”.  Watching this wonderful, heart - warming movie again suddenly reminded me that Sarah Polley appeared in “Lantern Hill” before she starred in “Road to Avonlea”. I was also reminded how great an actress Sarah was from a very young age.

Sarah Polley has come a long way since “Road to Avonlea”. Since then, she has become an acclaimed Writer and Director and recently announced that her next project will be a screen adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s novel “Alias Grace”.

The Duplicitous Dale House

Jasper Dale is one of Avonlea’s best loved citizens but he was originally only supposed to appear in the first season. When Jasper became a recurring character, he needed a place to live… but where?

The highly anticipated digitally remastered, widescreen special edition of Road to Avonlea – Season 6 will be available at the end of March 2012 exclusively at shopatsullivan.com. Here’s a sneak peek at the front cover.

The Incredible, Shrinking Lighthouse

The Incredible, Shrinking Lighthouse

One of the most recognizable visual elements of "Road to Avonlea" is the lighthouse. Standing atop a cliff overlooking the ocean it served not only as Gus Pike’s home but as a backdrop for many key Avonlea moments. However, what you may not know is that there were actually two lighthouses and neither one of them overlooked the ocean.

School Days

The schoolhouse was the only set on the Avonlea backlot that had a functional interior. Although the schoolhouse looked like it had been there for many years, it was actually designed and built from scratch for Road to Avonlea Season 1. The carpenters, scenic painters and set dressers did a fantastic job of making the school look authentic by “aging” the new lumber and using period appropriate furnishings. However, in reality, the schoolhouse was very much a temporary structure and was built for the sole purpose of being a functional film set.

To Bridge or Not to Bridge?

One of the most familiar elements of the Avonlea village is the covered bridge. Nestled on the very edge of the village, the bridge provided a strong visual reference as to whether someone was either coming to town or leaving. It was also a very effective device for establishing the period and providing some architectural detail to the set. What most people don’t know is that the bridge was also movable.

Photo of the Day: Practice Makes Perfect!

Ever wonder how the pie scene in season 1's "Proof of the Pudding" got to be so perfect? Practice, of course!

We were excited to see Mag Ruffman (Olivia King-Dale) on Global's Morning Show last week, and even more excited to learn that she's working on a series of how-to videos with Lowe's Home Improvement.

International Appeal of Road to Avonlea

Written by Meghan

Road to Avonlea is set in a small town on Prince Edward Island, on the East Coast of Canada. The reach of the show, however, spans the entire globe! The series has been broadcast around the world in dozens of languages. In French, it is known as “Les contes d’Avonlea”; in Spanish, it is “Camino a Avonlea”; it is "Tie Avonleaan" in Finland, and "Váratlan utazás" in Hungary.

Mrs. Rachel Lynde: When your heart skips a beat, it isn't love, its indigestion.

Put your Road to Avonlea knowledge to the test with these facts!

Who could forget Clive Pettibone? He may be the only man in Avonlea to match Hetty King’s stern, no-nonsense approach to life. When Clive brings his family to Avonlea in season four, the town’s new teacher and his children Izzy, Morgan, and Arthur, quickly become part of the community.

Avonlea fans might recognize Season 2 guest star Madeline Kahn, who played Sara Stanley’s Pigeon Plumtree in season 2's “It’s Just a Stage”. Plumtree, a world-famous actress, causes chaos while visiting Avonlea when she gets caught up in a love triangle gone wrong.  Kahn’s performance is as touching as it is hilarious.

We are remembering Canadian stage and television actor John Neville today, after hearing of his passing over the weekend.

We love this action shot of Rachel Lynde (Patricia Hamilton) and Hetty King (Jackie Burroughs) on Road to Avonlea.

Felicity, Felix, Cecily, Sara, Dora, Davey, Izzy…Road to Avonlea features some outstanding children, who are able to accomplish extraordinary things. Let’s look back at some of their most exciting adventures.

The digitally remastered fifth season of Road to Avonlea is now available for pre-order - accordingly, here are five of our favourite moments!

We adore this picture of Rachel Lynde (Patricia Hamilton) gleefully striking a pose as she presides over the Sunday school class in The Quarantine at Alexander Abraham's.

Spotlight on Bruce Greenwood

You may remember Bruce Greenwood from the Season 5 episode A Stranger in the Night, where he played the somewhat duplicitous Caleb Stokes. But did you know that since his appearance on Road to Avonlea he has had multiple roles in Hollywood blockbusters?

A great shot from the set of Road to Avonlea. We love the contrast between the long dresses, the race formation, and the crew and equipment stretching off into the background.

If you’re a fan of Avonlea, Wind at My Back, or Green Gables, you won’t want to miss our newest DVD release: By Way of the Stars.

Photo of the Day: Hawaii Meets Avonlea

One of these things is not like the others! We love Uncle Alec's summery threads in this behind-the-scenes Road to Avonlea shot.

We've been thinking about some of our favourite Road to Avonlea moments lately, so we asked our Sales & Acquisition Manager, Sarah, to fill us in on her favourite episode!

Sarah Polley (Sara Stanley) looks quite skeptical of having her makeup retouched in this behind-the-scenes shot from Road to Avonlea!

We absolutely love this picture of a grinning Mag Ruffman (Olivia King/Dale) in this behind-the-scenes shot from Road to Avonlea

We recently spent some time catching up with Kevin Sullivan to talk about history, current projects and the future.

Today's photo of the day captures a chilly behind-the-scenes moment on Road to Avonlea.

Today's Photo of the Day is a behind-the-scenes shot of two of a very young Gema Zamprogna (Felicity King) and Sarah Polley (Sara Stanley) preparing to shoot a scene for the episode "Aunt Abigail's Beau" in the first season of Road to Avonlea.

Remembering Frances Bay

Written by Meghan

We were extremely sad to hear of Frances Bay's passing earlier this week, at the age of 92.

Today's photo of the day captures a young Sarah Polley (Sara Stanley) in a serious moment on set.

Story girl Sarah Polley is back in the news, this time with great buzz about her most recent film. Take This Waltz, which she both wrote and directed, debuted at a gala presentation at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) this past Saturday.

As a 12-year-old actress on the set of her first feature film, The Scarlett Letter, Kristin Fairlie was mesmerized by the lead actress, Demi Moore.  She remembers exactly what Moore looked like when she showed up to a cast dinner sporting coveralls, messy hair and a cigar.

Sarah Polley is Mother-to-Be

Road to Avonlea fans will be pleased to learn that their story girl, Sarah Polley, is expecting her first child.  At the age of 32, the actress, writer and director just confirmed that she is expecting with her husband, David Sandomierski.

This behind-the-scenes video contains exclusive footage of acting legend Christopher Reeve portraying the villainous Robert Rutherford in Road to Avonlea’s third season.

Cedric Smith set a high standard for Canadian actors to follow while portraying the patriarch of the King Family, Alec King, on Road to Avonlea.  And now the Gemini Awards - the biggest award show for Canadian television - is recognizing his talent by honoring him with a prestigious award during their upcoming broadcast.

While many of Sullivan Entertainment’s stars have continued to achieve great success in the film and television industry, it is especially exciting when they’ve entered the world of music!  Road to Avonlea's Zachary Bennett (top photo, center), who played Felix King, is the lead singer of an indie rock band called Tin Star Orphans and they are gaining notoriety as one of the most exciting live bands in Toronto.

The Story Girl Earns Her Name

When casting for the King family children in Road to Avonlea, Kevin Sullivan had them act out scenes together.  One of Sarah Polley’s key tests involved a scene right out of L.M. Montgomery’s novels, The Story Girl, which inspired some of the moments and characters in Sullivan’s series.

Not just one, but two Road to Avonlea alumni, will be heading the film lineup at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.  Sarah Polley, who played Sara Stanley, and Ryan Gosling, who guest starred in the series’ seventh season, are among the top with movies at the festival.

Kyle Labine still remembers the lessons Colleen Dewhurst taught him on the set of Road to Avonlea.  By playing the small orphaned boy, Davey Keith, who came under the guardianship of Marilla (Dewhurst), Kyle was able to work with one of Canada’s greatest theatre actresses when he was only seven years old.

A director on Road to Avonlea and one of Canada’s most prominent personalities in the film industry, George Bloomfield (pictured above, far right) sadly passed away in May at the age of 81.  The five-time Gemini Award-winner led a very successful career as a director, producer and writer, and his work is especially notable to fans of 70’s and 80’s television.

Walk of Fame Anniversary

On this day, June 8, of last year Sarah Polley was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame, alongside some of Canada’s greatest stars.

Writer, director and producer Sarah Polley has once again helped advance the recognition of Canadian film.  The movie Splice, in which the Road to Avonlea actress starred with Oscar-winner Adrien Brody, was named 2010’s highest-grossing Canadian film.

A Toast to Avonlea

Felicity King and Gus Pike’s wedding day was much more than the joining of two soul mates.  It also symbolized the beginning of the end for the citizens of Avonlea in this last episode of the series.  As we continue to remember the most famous weddings in Sullivan productions, in celebration of the Royal Wedding today, here are two memorable speeches from Felicity and Gus’s special day.

Since today marked one of the greatest anticipated events of this century, the Royal Wedding of Prince William to Catherine Middleton, we decided to celebrate the best wedding moments in Sullivan productions.  Here is a historic look at the traditional Presbyterian wedding vows that were used in the wedding of Jasper Dale to Olivia King in Season 3 of Road to Avonlea.  We have also included Jasper’s moving speech to Olivia at the bottom.

Update on Avonlea's David Fox

The veteran Canadian actor who played Avonlea school teacher Clive Pettibone on Road to Avonlea is still an active performer on stage, even now in his 70th year.  David Fox can currently be seen in the play Forests, written by Montreal playwright Wajdi Mouawad, whose play, Incendies, was adapted into film and nominated for Best Foreign Film at this year’s Oscars.

How Kissing Was Discovered

This month, Sullivan Insiders can enjoy watching the full Road to Avonlea episode “How Kissing Was Discovered” on SullivanMovies.com.  Those who have seen it will remember it as their very first introduction to the pipe-smoking and fiddle-playing Gus Pike, in Season Two.

Take a look at this sneak peek video with actress Gema Zamprogna, who played Felicity King on Road to Avonlea.  The then 13-year-old Gema reveals one of her most memorable scenes and what it was like working with Sarah Polley.

The Poet's Thought

Sara Stanley’s vivid imagination and penchant for stories seemed to be an odd thing to the people of Avonlea when they first met her.  But after seeing Sara’s fascination in stories first hand, especially after she recited "The Little Match Girl" in Jasper’s Magic Lantern Show, her friends and family began to accept the poetic workings of her mind.

Hagood Hardy's Avonlea Melodies

Love, Loss, and What I Wore

On the heels of our recent tribute to Patricia Hamilton, the actress who played Rachel Lynde in both Anne of Green Gables and Road to Avonlea, we’d thought we’d update you on her recent theatrical work alongside some of Canada’s most familiar female faces.

Road to Avonlea enthusiasts will remember that when Cedric Smith leant his singing voice to some of the show's episodes, some of the most memorable scenes in the series were created.

Fans of Cedric Smith may be surprised to learn that years before the actor played Alec King on Road to Avonlea, he was part of a Canadian folk rock psych band!

Viewers who appreciate Road to Avonlea’s memorable theme music, as well as Gus Pike’s musical motif, might appreciate knowing a little more about the composers that created these important elements of the show.

Gus Pike is one of the most unique characters on Road to Avonlea because of his refusal to live an ordinary life.  There were moments when he gave up his dreams in order to conform to island life and further his chances of building a steady relationship with Felicity.  But when he is confronted with choosing a career at the White Sands Hotel or experiencing more adventures as a sailor, we see what a deep pull the sea has on Gus.

Before Ryan Gosling earned his status as one of the most talented (and adored) current leading men in Hollywood, the London, Ontario native was guest starring on Road to Avonlea!

The Witch of Avonlea

Written by Clare

It wasn’t just the children of Avonlea that were afraid of the town’s resident “witch” – Peg Bowen.  Some of the adults bought into the folklore as well.  But what about Peg was so “witchly” and what ideas were passed onto the children to make them think she was dangerous?  And more importantly, do those ideas still exist today?

After Felicity King learns that Gus Pike has been lost at sea, she isn't sure if her heart can handle caring that deeply for another person ever again.  She becomes somewhat of a recluse, not really caring to become involved in town life or support the hasty remarriage of her friend, Seth, whose young wife had recently died.  But all this changes the day four young children unexpectedly come barging into her life - literally.

Of all the mothers in Avonlea, Janet King seems to represent the most traditional vision of motherhood.  Her love of family, the deep companionship she shares with her husband, Alec, and the warmth she radiates to her friends and relations all seem to encapsulate many of the traditional aspects of motherhood.

The Evolution of a Love Story

"I gave this to you before as an engagement ring and you gave it back. I’m offerin’ it to you again. This time, no strings attached. Whenever you’re lonely or discouraged, look at it and remember, I love you Felicity, I always will.” – Episode: Otherwise Engaged

Here’s a look at Sara Stanley’s initial reaction to the natural beauty of Prince Edward Island as she travels for the first time to the King Farm.

A Fan From Iran

Imagine being famous and having the chance to really get to know one of your biggest T.V fans. What would you do? As you can see from the clip, Cedric Smith was delighted to get to know a real fan who really appreciated his acting. Cedric was overwhelmed by the man’s passion and overall friendliness that even strengthen his health to get better.

The feeling you get when you revisit an old book, or put on a soundtrack that has been collecting dust on your shelf, is something that everyone can relate to.  In the same way, sometimes lasting memories are the lines we remember from feature films and television series.  They can serve as a reminder of specific times in our lives and the impressions certain characters and situations had on us. Here’s a collection of some of Road to Avonlea’s most memorable, often comical quotes.  Feel free to add your own!
