Open-Air Operas In Vogue

Perhaps Mozart never envisioned his operas being performed in the great outdoors, but the practice has actually been a long-standing tradition in England.  This June and July, music lovers will be attending “open-air” festivals all over the country.  Garsington Opera’s  outdoor production of Mozart’s "Magic Flute", for example, will take place on the beautiful estate of Wormsley, north west of London.

For the first time in history, Mozart’s famous opera, The Magic Flute, will be performed in modern Egyptian dialect.

The Neuschwanstein Castle, one of the most popular castles in Europe, is perhaps one of the most magical locations Kevin Sullivan captured for his film Mozart’s Magic Flute Diaries.  Though located in Bavaria, Kevin was able to use the photos he personally took of the castle and, with green screen technology, give his film a fantastic European landscape.  Here’s how Kevin was able to do this.

Passionate about both art and music, Kevin Sullivan decided to tackle both by delving into the world of Mozart’s masterpiece, The Magic Flute.  He wanted to showcase the extravagance of Mozart’s era, but also give his film the energy of a modern pop video.  And there were many steps involved in doing so.  Here’s a look at his inspiration for the film in its initial stages.

Today, when musicians and bands prepare to go on tour they expect to leave their friends and families for a few months at a time, with the promise of a start and end time to their trip.  But in Mozart’s era, touring could last years.  And for the young child prodigy, it did.

Mozart was a child who didn’t know what it was like to be a child. His talent over took everything in his life and his father wanted to show his talent to the world. For three and a half years straight Mozart and his family traveled around Europe to perform to princes, queens, dukes, bishops and all the high society families.

One of the most spectacular operas that took place in the 18th century at the Grand Opera was Aida. Aida was based upon the long standing tradition of Egyptian festivities.

Salzburg, one the most popular tourist attractions within Europe. It is said that the tourist ratio is higher than Venice or Florence. Well it is filled with dreaming green hills, romantic gardens, and beautiful architecture so why wouldn’t it be.
