Craig Kielburger, founder of Free The Children, sat down with Kevin Sullivan and explained how he felt Anne of Green Gables embodied many of the themes his organization represented. Specifically, he talked about empowering women.

One of our goals for this site, in particular the “Life Altering Books” section, is to share our appreciation for the literature, poetry, quotes and even songs, that have impacted our lives – in both small and big ways.  Here is one passage from a favourite novel, To the Lighthouse, written by Virginia Woolf in 1927.  It spans the years 1910 to 1920.

A friend of mine is a high school teacher and today, for the countless time, she was asked by one of her students whether they had missed anything by not coming to class the day before.  One of her colleagues who overheard this conversation, directed her to the following poem, which any teacher out there will undoubtedly appreciate.

It’s become a well-known fact in many family circles that if a Monopoly board is taken out, the game will last hours on end.  But imagine how long fans will be playing if the board game is Avonlea or Wind at My Back-themed?  This idea has actually been put into action by a passionate fan member of our forum - AvFan4vr.

While listening to the radio the other day, a discussion about women’s bridal and baby showers came up.  A female radio commentator was of the opinion that women act too much like children at their own parties, that games such as making bridal gowns out of toilet paper or “Baby Bingo” actually make women seem ridiculous and add a torturous element to the party for any males that may be present.

We recently talked about the worthwhile habit of keeping a diary and how instrumental it can be in keeping track of the little instances in life that are easily forgotten.  But apparently, writing in a diary has a more scientific effect on our emotions than we might have thought.

Sending a well-written letter today seems like a forgotten art form.  In fact, it could be said that people spend more time discussing how it’s a shame no one sends letters anymore than they do actually composing them (like this blog).  It wasn’t long ago that letter writing was both a necessity and a joyful thing in people’s lives.  In L.M. Montgomery’s day, it seemed an inherent responsibility to write detailed letters and to write them well.

For some, recording their emotions in a diary is an absolutely necessity in life, as well as a therapeutic pastime.  Others keep a journal for more practical reasons or to keep their memories sharp, while a few feel the need to preserve their place in history.  Historians and scholars today have a lot of gratitude for those who did decide to explain their life’s actions and thoughts on the page – not the least of them being author L.M. Montgomery.
